Sophomore Russell Robinson finished first in the triple jump and broke the record with a mark of 16.03m. Robinson now holds both the outdoor triple and long jump program records.

Energy, inconsistency and early injuries. This is the story surrounding the women’s basketball season, which ended after a second-round exit in the ACC Tournament against Virginia Tech.

“We played 35 good minutes,” Miami head coach Jim Larrañaga said. “The last four to five minutes of the first half killed us.”

Wrapping up the indoor season, the Canes headed north to Clemson where the team competed in the ACC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Miami found success during the three-day affair and returned to Coral Gables with an impressive resume.

“I think the starters were absolutely flat,” Meier said. “I shouldn’t be coaching energy, I just shouldn’t. I had to and I had to burn timeouts, which ended up biting us in the butt later in the game.”

After a 10-month break, the Canes are back on the track. Last March, the team was in Albuquerque, N.M. preparing for the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships, when the coronavirus pandemic ended their season.

After a series of postponements, the Hurricanes hit the road for the first time this season looking to upset No. 4 NC State. The Canes put up a less than stellar performance at the Reynold Coliseum, where they fell to the Wolfpack 78-47.

Miami returns four sophomore players who are looking to make a bigger impact on the team this season.

This offseason the Canes welcomed two high-prospect freshmen to the team.

“Unfortunately, we had an opportunity to see some tough things in our country,” women’s basketball head coach Katie Meier said. “Some really unfair moments where justice wasn't being served. And you know, we had a very strong voice collectively, we wanted to respond.”
