Salsa enthusiasts and non-dancers alike on campus flooded Shalala Ballroom for UM’s latino dance team Ufuerza’s first showcase following the pandemic. Students did not hesitate to snag tickets for the now sold-out, cocktail-attire event anticipated to be a night of “Fuego and Lux,” a title coined by the group. Bachata and merengue as well as other traditional dances were blended in several lively, tasteful routines performed by the team established in 2016. There was even a Hora Loca, or “crazy hour” in Spanish, where members of Ufuerza brought up audience members onto the dance floor to join in the festivities.

Love is in the air and in UM’s classrooms this valentine season. Continuing a 20 year tradition, the music fraternity Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia has been singing their way through campus this February, serenading love songs to unsuspecting students.

Body cam footage released last Jan. 27 depicts Memphis’ Police arrest and assault of Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man. An officer in an unmarked car pulled him over on the evening of Jan. 7 for alleged reckless driving. The reason for this stop was not communicated to Nichols. Nichols said he “didn't do anything” when he was held down to the ground, visibly showing no initial resistance at the traffic stop by more officers who arrived. When he was pepper sprayed and tased, Nichols fled the scene in fear which began a foot chase before he was pinned down again and kicked in the head.
