With matches against reigning national champion Virginia and fellow ACC foe Virginia Tech, the ‘Canes knew they were not going to have an easy time on their road trip. Miami lost 4-0 to No. 21 Virginia on Friday before suffering a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to Virginia Tech two days later.
Miami men’s tennis is now the team to beat in South Florida. With a quick 4-0 victory over in-state rival Florida Gulf Coast University, Miami improves to 4-0 against Florida schools, sweeping every single one of them. The Hurricanes have also extended their home winning streak to six.
For the past three seasons, the University of Central Florida (UCF) has been the better team against the ‘Canes. Situated next to the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida, UCF has become a hotbed for tennis talent. The script was flipped on Friday as the ‘Canes dominated the Knights, 4-0, to win their third consecutive match.
Miami men’s tennis refused to lose Friday evening against the University of North Florida at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center in Coral Gables. Despite many of the matches being tightly contested, Miami (4-2) stayed poised and rattled off seven straight victories for a 7-0 sweep. Two days later, the same script played out again, this time a 4-0 victory against the FAU Owls.
Miami men’s tennis knew its work would be cut out for them when it traveled to Athens, Georgia, to participate in the ITA Kickoff Weekend Challenge. The University of Georgia, a perennial tennis powerhouse with the top ranked player in the nation, played host to the ‘Canes, the Louisville Cardinals and the LSU Tigers.
After a lengthy offseason full of practices and invitationals, Miami men’s tennis returned to play in style at the Neil Schiff Tennis Center. On a breezy Saturday morning that saw temperatures in the 40s, the Hurricanes made quick work of the Troy Trojans, 4-0, before earning their second sweep of the day against the Binghamton Bearcats in the evening.
In this matchup, Miami women’s basketball (7-5, 0-1 ACC) made the trek up to Tallahassee, Florida to try and hand the Florida State Seminoles (12-2, 1-0 ACC) their second straight loss.
"Our bench came in and produced for us. Fifteen assists and 51 points came off the bench," head coach Katie Meier said. "Lashae is taking command and really understanding that she can be an incredible impact player not only on this team, but also in the ACC."
