I’m not going to make too much of a tough game for Jacory Harris against Florida State. He went up against one of the best pass rushing teams in the nation, who also have playmakers in the secondary like Lamarcus Joyne

In its first test against a school from a major conference, the University of Miami men’s basketball team prevailed against Rutgers Tuesday night by a final score of 74-57 for head coach Jim Larranaga’s second win with Miami.

There has quite possibly never been a year at the University of Miami where a comparable level of hype and excitement surrounds both the men’s and women’s basketball programs.

The men’s basketball team’s 2011-12 season is set to launch Thursday at 7 p.m. in an exhibition game against Florida Southern at the BankUnited Center.

You already know what he was able to do at George Mason. He put them on the map. He’s the reason why men’s basketball comes to mind before the Virginia delegate at the Constitutional Convention when someone says “George Mason.” Who could ever forget the way he stole the hearts of the entire nation with his miraculous 2006 run to the Final Four as an 11-seed. In 14 seasons with the Patriots, Larranaga earned the most wins in school history as well as Colonial Athletic Association history. It’s going to be something special to see what he can do with the talent on this team.

I say this slightly skeptically, but quarterback play has actually been one of the strengths of the team and the criticism of Jacory Harris during this three-game home stand is drastically unjustified. Harris is completing 69 percent of his passes and has thrown twice as many touchdowns as interceptions. Virginia Tech’s Logan Thomas has only thrown more touchdowns than interceptions once this season, and it came against Appalachian State. We’ll have to see how Harris’ numbers hold up playing in the hostile environment of Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, VA.

On Saturday’s CBS telecast of the Miami Dolphins’ preseason game against the Buccaneers, Dolphins CEO Mike Dee made an appearance in the broadcast booth and announced that the Dolphins will honor the Florida Gators’ 2008 national championship when the Denver Broncos come to town on Sunday October 23.
