De-Tunneling your vision: Tunnel of Oppression set to challenge student viewers

The Tunnel of Oppression, which will be shown at the University Center Flamingo Ballrooms from 4 to 9 p.m. today through Wed., is a nationally recognized program that takes place on more than seventy campuses across the nation. The goal behind the Tunnel is to challenge student’s perceptions and beliefs on issues dealing with oppression and hatred.

Honor Council prepares for Academic Integrity Week to raise awareness of University Honor Code

The University of Miami Honor Council will host Academic Integrity Week from April 16 to April 18 in hopes of raising awareness of the University Honor Code, ratified in 1986 to encourage and protect academic integrity.

First Annual UBS Spelling Bee conquered by freshman

These were just a few of the words posed to students at the United Black Students’ (UBS) First Annual Spelling Bee, ultimately conquered by the competition’s winner, Lauren Weiner, a freshman. For many, it was a trip down memory lane to the good old days of elementary spelling wars.

Professors discuss African missionary work

The African Student Union, founded on campus nearly 20 years ago, has begun its second annual Africa Week. Professors Patti Rose, David Kling and Margaret Marshall served as panelists at an event termed “Mission (Im)possible” Tuesday evening in the Mahoney Pearson classrooms. The event aspired to give students a holistic view of the ups and downs of missionary work in Africa.

Mister and Miss International 2008 crowned

Stomping, yelling and pounding his chest, freshman Kenji Suzuki brought a little bit of his native Hawaii to the UC Thursday night. One war dance, Q&A session and formal and beachwear competition later, Suzuki found himself crowned Mr. International 2008.

Adrienne Arsht, philanthropist and University of Miami trustee since May, is donating a $5 million gift to be used for university-wide ethics programs, eye research, athletics, the music school and more.

UM students organize charitable Dance Marathon

Dance Marathon, a charity event to benefit ill children that sprouted at Penn State University and has spread to over 80 universities across the nation, will take place at the University of Miami for the first time this Saturday, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Correction: Surfrider UM concert to be held this Tuesday

In the Oct. 9 issue of The Miami Hurricane, in the ”Events Beats,” Surfrider UM was cited as having held a benefit concert last Tuesday.  However, the benefit concert is actually this Tuesday, Oct. 14., at the UC Patio.
