Democracy shouldn’t be easy, of course, but it also shouldn’t be a choice between exercising a constitutional right and graduating, or putting food on the table. The United States should declare election day a national holiday.

Gov. Charlie Crist declared a “state of emergency” Tuesday to extend voting hours statewide from eight to 12 hours for today and tomorrow. On these days, polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Administrators attempt to shorten voting lines, encourage early voting

On Nov. 2, 2004, 23-year-old Jose A. Martinez waited for two hours in the Miami heat outside of the University of Miami’s BankUnited Center to vote in the general election, along with 1,077 others who battled long lines beginning at 7 a.m. This year, administrators and student organizations are taking measures to ensure a smoother voting process.

Actor Matt Damon to promote early voting for Obama at UM on Monday

Actor Matt Damon will visit the University of Miami to speak at an early vote rally on behalf of the Barack Obama Campaign at noon on the UC Rock, Monday, according to an Obama For America student intern.
