Since winning “The X Factor UK” in 2011 – the first group entry to do so – British girl group Little Mix has quickly become an international success. The girls – Jesy Nelson, Perrie Edwards, Leigh-Anne Pinnock and Jade Thirlwall – were recently certified double platinum in Australia and debuted at No. 1 in the UK with their single “Wings.” Little Mix now has their eyes set on the U.S. The group will release its debut album, “DNA,” on May 28 and make its U.S. television debut on “Good Morning America” on June 7. One listen to “DNA” and there’s no doubt the girls will soon take over America. The vocals are strong and the tracks are catchy. The album kicks off with “Wings,” an empowering pop song against haters. The track has the same quality that the album and the group itself has: sass. And if there’s anything that artists like Nicki Minaj and Cher Lloyd have taught us, it’s that attitude – especially for female performers in today’s industry – is a must. The next track, “DNA,” shows the girls’ edgier side. The stand-out harmonies on this song are incredible and the lyrics are catchy: “I’m the X [...]

Jane Goodall, the British primatologist and anthropologist, is best known for her study of social interactions between chimpanzees in Tanzania’s Gombe National Park. Since first entering the Gombe in 1960 as a young woman with no collegiate training, Goodall has become a leader in the field of animal behavior and an advocate for environmental conservation. Goodall now spends more than 300 days out of the year traveling and talking to audiences about how they can help other people, animals and the environment. She visited the University of Miami on April 29 and gave a lecture called “Reason for Hope” in the BankUnited Center. The Miami Hurricane had the chance to speak with her about the impact of her research and translating what she has learned to college students. The Miami Hurricane: As students, we’re constantly being told what we should and shouldn’t do with our lives. Two things we’re told are “Do what you’re passionate about” and “Do something that will matter,” and you’ve done both in your life. What do you think about that advice that is frequently given to students? What do you think is the best way to approach that? Jane Goodall: Don’t go deeply into something [...]

The University of Miami graduate Dino Ghilotti was killed in a tw0-car crash Sunday morning, according to the Coral Gables Police Department and a statement released by President Donna E. Shalala. A memorial service will be held for him at 5 p.m. Monday at St. Augustine Church, located at 1400 Miller Rd., across the street from campus, said UM spokeswoman Margot Winick. It will be followed by a memorial service at the Newman Alumni Center on campus. Friends said that Ghilotti, 22, was a fun and kind-hearted person. “Dino was one of the nicest, funniest kids I had the pleasure of meeting,” said alumnus Katie Dorsey, who lived a floor below Ghilotti their freshman year. “He was the type of guy who was always excited to see you around campus and who always had a huge smile on his face that would brighten your day.” Ghilotti was in the passenger seat of a car that crashed on Bird Road and San Amaro Drive just after 4:30 a.m., according to the Coral Gables Police. The car was being driven by another UM student, but no further details were available as of Sunday afternoon. “The entire university community is heartbroken to hear [...]

Nearly a thousand “trippy” and “turnt” rap lovers of Miami gathered at LMNT on Saturday to rage with one of hip-hop’s most brutally crunk triple-threats. A girl on our left wobbled her legs to the post-opener intermission music. A guy on my right chugged Hennessy straight out of his own personal bottle. A$AP Ferg prepped and fired up a vigorous crowd, leaving hundreds of fans still bouncing with fervor long after his exit. They were ready and waiting for Juicy J. And Juicy J was ready for them. When it came time, he charged on stage, fully equipped with pulverizing beats and erupting vocals. He started his show with the delectably suggestive “Aint No Comin’ Down,” instructing the crowd to “roll up” and “turn up.” Believe us, they were turned up. Even more so when the former Triple 6 Mafia co-spitter shouted into the mic, “This is the most turn’t up city I’ve seen the whole damn tour!” Although it was no secret that Juicy J has a fondness for the city of Miami (he tributes to the infamous King of Diamonds Gentleman’s Club in his accoladed track, “Bands A Make Her Dance”), the audience was reassured Saturday night. The [...]

For students, opportunities to enjoy live music tend to be limited to local events. But, Rain Fest wants to change that. Rain Fest is a music and arts festival held at Costa Rica’s Hotel Punta Leona from Friday through Sunday. The festival, which is in its third year, focuses on the rich, life-loving society of Costa Rica, while simultaneously promoting ecological and cultural awareness. “You’ll experience the food, you’ll help out the communities, and just do a lot more to where you’re not so separated from the actual country,” UM alumnus Markeem Middleton said. Middleton, promoter of this year’s festival, has experienced Rain Fest not just as a participant, but also as a performer. He performed there the past two years with his band, Keem + the Go-Getters. The festival allows hotel guests opportunities to do community outreach with the schools and beaches as well as participate in a night walk through the Costa Rican forest. As the name would imply, the main focus of the festival is to celebrate the rain. It marks the start of the rainy season, which, Middleton pointed out, is sometimes viewed with dread. However, the festival urges people to appreciate the life-giving effects of [...]

Hailing from Houston, Texas, the indie-pop band Wild Moccasins consists of Cody Swann and Zahira Gutierrez on guitar and vocals, respectively, along with guitarist Andrew Lee, bassist Nicholas Cody and drummer John Baldwin. The band, which released its first album “Skin Collisions Past” in 2011, is currently working on its sophomore album. Wild Moccasins kicks off its three-week tour with Of Montreal on Friday at Grand Central. After playing numerous shows together, Of Montreal hand-picked Wild Moccasins to tour with them. The Miami Hurricane got the chance to talk to Gutierrez about touring, music tastes and what they plan to do next. The Miami Hurricane: How did you guys meet and how did the band form? Zahira Gutierrez: It started off with Cody and me who started the band. We’ve been dating for awhile. Cody was writing songs on acoustic guitar and I’d help him out and sing. We met the rest of the band at shows and parties and we all had kind of the same idea. The band has been together for about five or six years now. TMH: What’s it like working with someone you’re in a relationship with? Is it any different? ZG: We try keep [...]

The Postelles are a New York-raised band going back to simpler sounds. Their sophomore album “… And It Shook Me” hit stores Tuesday with songs that range from indie and folksy to old-style pop rock. Their tracks have a pure quality that makes them reminiscent of a range of bands and styles, particularly The Strokes, whose guitarist helped produce their first album back in 2011. The group captures listeners with their upbeat, optimistic sound, playful instrumentals and meaningful lyrics. Though some of the songs sound similar, the band keeps fans interested with fun tracks perfect for summer. The opening and title track “And It Shook Me” stands out with its folksy, catchy guitar and provocative lyrics, such as the line “So just open the door, ‘cause I won’t bang it down no more.” The song also establishes the classic rock vibe that is favored by the band, especially later in the album. The next track “Pretend It’s Love” introduces a bluesy sound as the leader singer goes back and forth with artist Alex Winston in the typical love ballad battle, in which they ruefully sing “Run, run, run away from it all because we lost it all.” The fourth track on [...]

The seeds of UM senior Juan Pablo Ruiz’s passion for scientific research were planted at a young age, when curiosity set in about the world around him. That passion has bloomed into major academic achievements, including his most recent award, a Gilliam Fellowship for Advanced Study from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute to pursue his Ph.D. For Ruiz, majoring in biomedical engineering and English is a great opportunity to combine what he is good at - scientific research - with something he believes is fundamentally important - human exploration. “I have always been a fan of the sciences and every man in my family has practiced engineering,” Ruiz said. “I love math and logical ways of thinking as well, so I thought that [biomedical engineering] was the natural course to take. Interms of English, I have been writing since I was in middle school - short stories and novels. I actually wrote three unpublished novels before I even came to the University of Miami.” Ruiz’s research includes working in a tissue-engineering lab with adult stem cells, as well as at the Harvard Stem Cell Institute for two consecutive summers. Ruiz credits his mentor, Knight Chair Herman Cheung, for not only guiding his research activities, but also for his hard work and support throughout his time at UM. Cheung said he is very proud of Ruiz, and [...]

Robert DuBord and his wife Rhonda packed a U-Haul truck full of Midwestern antiques before beginning his post at the University of Miami in 1981. “My wife was a native Floridian and wanted to head back,” he said. “I was lucky enough to get a job opportunity at UM.” After 32 years of UM under his belt, DuBord will retire at the end of the spring semester. DuBord served as an associate director for the Department of Housing and as an associate director for finances and maintenance and personnel. He advised the business operations of the student media outlets WVUM, The Miami Hurricane, Ibis Yearbook and Distraction magazine. DuBord enjoyed seeing students grow after becoming a member of student media. “It was a great joy to see them grow and see them take that media opportunity and have it blossom into something good for them,” he said. In the maintenance side of his job, DuBord ensured that students had safe living and working environments. He helped during the university’s major residential changes such as the reconstruction after Hurricane Andrew and the opening of the University Village, the on-campus student apartments.
