Referendum could raise activities fee

A proposed referendum may require that students pay one more dollar as a part of the yearly student activities fee. The referendum states that the $1 fee be allocated to Student Government starting next June. If it were to pass, the referendum would bring in roughly $19,000 for SG.

Demonstration ignites fire safety awareness

The fire was part of a live burn demonstration of two mock dorm rooms hosted by the security office in the Department of Housing and Residence Life Wednesday afternoon on the university green. As a part of National Fire Safety Awareness Month, the office staged the burn, giving away free pizza, drinks, T-shirts and refrigerator magnets to call students’ attentions to fire safety issues.

‘Babycakes’ sweetens students’ days

Johnnie Mae Dawson, a cashier at Mango and Manny’s, the food court vendor specializing in Caribbean cuisine and chop chops, has been making hungry students smile for the past 15 years. As students hand Dawson their cash, Cane Cards and credit cards, she doesn’t hesitate to call them any variation of “pookie,” “sweetheart,” “mama” and most notably, “babycakes.”
